The Drive to Get Kids with Movement Limitations Driving

LEARN’s Geeks for Kids program builds custom, electric cars and other assistive devices for kids with movement limitations; we empower kids to explore their world independently - often for the first time in their lives.  With this freedom, they are no longer sitting on life’s sidelines, passive observers from strollers and wheelchairs.

Plus, we make our kids feel “cool” with a hot rod that excites and engages their peers and encourages them to play together. "Research shows kids’ interaction with [these rideable] cars helps advance developmental, physical, social, language and cognitive skills," reports Sam Logan, assistant professor at Oregon State University's College of Public Health and Human Sciences.  Since its launch in 2019, we have gotten 297 kids racing.  And, we will get another 80+ kids racing in June.

Professional engineers, programmers, mechanics and other tech folk work with our high school and college students to build these cars.  As they build, our students apply the skills they learn in the classroom and the lab to designing and building real-world solutions for other kids.

Why It Matters

Over 500,000 kids under age five in the U.S. have significant mobility challenges. Most don’t qualify for power wheelchairs, which are expensive and usually reserved for older children. Without independent movement, young kids miss out on essential social, physical, and cognitive development.  Studies show that toddlers with mobility disabilities interact with peers far less than other kids — just 6 to 20 minutes a day compared to an hour for their typically-developing peers.

The Impact

Our cars bridge that gap. They give kids the freedom to explore, play, and connect with others — just like any other kid.  And because they look like cool hot rods, these cars invite other kids to join in their fun.

Our Mission

  • To empower kids with movement limitations to explore and grow.

  • Inspire innovation by engaging high school and college students in hands-on, life-changing engineering work.
  • Unite communities through volunteerism and a shared purpose: giving every child the #Power2Play.

Together, we can turn challenges into joy rides.
100% of your bid, including Buyers Premium, will go toward changing children's lives!  The Geeks for Kids program is part of LEARN Science and Math, an all-volunteer, 501c3 organization.  At LEARN, no one is paid for doing good; we do because it feels good.
